Kent is a well-respected and trusted financial executive with 36 years in financial management. His experience was developed in 3 diverse career segments: commercial bank officer, business executive and business owner/founder. He has been a trusted advisor to or a member of the executive management team for middle-market (sales of $5M to$75M+) companies in a multitude of industries such as general contractors, specialty subcontractors, transportation, heavy equipment sales and rental, wholesale tires, lumber & building products, high tech defense contracting, real estate development & leasing, precision metal fabrication, food production, agriculture products, professional sports teams, cleaning supplies distribution, reinforcing steel fabrication & installation, precast concrete, and others.
Kent adapts well to change. He became CFO of a construction company having extensive experience in financial analysis, forecasting and risk management, but limited experience with percent-of-completion accounting, bonding, lien laws and other elements unique to the construction industry. He mastered these and other skills and created a very capable, highly efficient and cohesive team of accounting, HR and IT personnel. His team accurately and skillfully supported the profitable growth of a regional construction company with annual revenues of $16 million to become the largest reinforcing steel contractor in the nation achieving annual sales of $500 million and increasing total personnel from 135 to 2,300 in just 8 years.
Kent plans and achieves complex processes and meets compressed time schedules. As CFO he reduced the delivery time of the monthly reporting and analytics package for the reinforcing steel subcontractor from the 13th of each month to the 6th business day of each month. He also led the due diligence and integration teams for 4 business acquisitions and for the ultimate sale of the company to a multi-national public entity at a very lucrative valuation for the selling shareholders.
He creates a work environment that fosters excellence in work product, a sense of pride in personal and team performance, and an attitude of cooperation within teams and among departments. The rapid growth of the construction company involved the addition of personnel and integration of new employee groups. This process involved the assimilation of people who had apprehensions and perceptions of adversarial relationships. He successfully changed counter-productive attitudes into amicable, mutually beneficial and productive relationships through information transparency, team development, and fair & sincere interest in each employee.
He develops strong relationships with co-workers, outside professionals and service providers. He builds trust and confidence through information accuracy, timeliness, integrity, and a calm and comfortable demeanor.
He values individuals. He believes that a company’s most valuable assets are its people - their personal safety and well-being, their professional growth & development, and the health and stability of their home and family. Kent earned a Master of Business Administration degree with an emphasis in corporate finance from Brigham Young University. He also completed his undergraduate studies at BYU in the university’s nationally distinguished School of Accountancy. He has served on the board and as president of the San Diego chapters of the Construction Financial Management Association and of the BYU Management Society, and on the board of Junior Achievement. He has been active as a volunteer in church service, Boy Scouts of America, Boys and Girls Club, and other community service. Kent and his wife of 37 years reside in San Diego County. They have 5 sons, 1 daughter and 12 grandchildren. He also is fluent in written and spoken Spanish.
